I just converted 3 TDI jettas this year with systems setup exactly like grease car but with better components. I've done everything i possibly can and want to do to run this system on a TDI -- I dewater, start with good clean oil that is generally only used one night at good restaurants, heat and settle, and filter good. After 18,000 since conversion on my 2001, i'm noticing hard starts . When i run on diesel for a few days , it clears up and injectors don't nail as much and daily it seems to start easier. Go back to veg and purge real good and go 5 miles before shutdown for a day and i notice right away , a little harder to start than it was day before i switched to veg. So my injectors may need rebuilding. My friend noticed harder starts on his car too after a few thousand miles after conversion. His engine has 190,000. His injectors may need rebuilding. At any rate, the injectors do fine on diesel or biodiesel just not on wvo. That tells me something.
People in TDI forums say rebuild injectors from 100,000 to 200,000 anyway just as general maintenance. Well, injector nozzles cost a couple hundred bucks and if i am going to do that anyway, i might as well do it with injector nozzles that are designed for vegetable oil and give my self the best fighting chance to be successful with WVO in a TDI. I have yet to find a real single person with over 100,000 wvo miles on a TDI and you can read lots of bad stories with the greasecar type systems. Elsbett wont just sell the nozzles though which is why i say by your elsbett system first. Anyone know where to get wvo nozzles? Do one of the other german companies sell just nozzles?
Now maybe i could rebuild injectors with 200.00 oem nozzles and i can run grease for 100,000 miles on them. maybe they were just a little clogged to begin with and wvo just aggravated them. New nozzles wont do that. Maybe i can drive for a hundreds of thousands of miles with nailing injectors and hard starts. I dont want to chance that. I will pop test my and see what i find out. But since i only had 63,000 on my nozzles to begin with I am not that hopeful they can withstand wvo. Also, See here for JTF's theory on what kit you should get for a TDI. http://journeytoforever.org/biodiesel_svo.html#Elsbett
I am real hopeful about an elsbett system though as i really want to drive my TDI.
